3 Days Ait Benhaddou & Erg Chebbi Desert Tour
Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Benhaddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley
Departing from Marrakech at 9 am in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle, we embark on a scenic journey over the Atlas Mountain range, treating ourselves to breathtaking views of the picturesque countryside below. Our first major stop is the iconic Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site. After a relaxing break to explore the kasbah, we continue our drive to Ouarzazate, about an hour away, for a delightful lunch and some sightseeing.
Local cafes in Ouarzazate offer a variety of Moroccan specialties and familiar Western dishes. Post-lunch, our adventure continues along the Dades Valley route, leading us to our overnight guesthouse. The guesthouse provides private ensuite rooms, and a delicious evening meal and breakfast are included.
Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Merzouga – Erg Chebbi
As the morning unfolds, we traverse the Dades valley, visiting captivating sites such as the Dades Gorge and Todra Gorge on our way to Merzouga. In Merzouga, we explore the village and meet our camels, setting off on a unique 1.5-hour camel ride into the dunes of Erg Chebbi. The camel trek, usually timed just before sunset, treats us to the enchanting sight of the sun setting over the landscape from the dunes' summit.
Upon reaching the desert camp at Erg Chebbi, we are welcomed with refreshing mint tea. The evening is spent under the stars, by a crackling fire, enjoying a traditional meal of Tagine or couscous (vegetarian options available). The night continues with a lively drum party and storytelling. The camp provides toilet facilities, and for those inclined, sleeping directly under the stars is an option, although enclosed Bivouacs are available for everyone.
Day 3: Erg Chebbi – Merzouga – Marrakech
Rise early just before sunrise for a captivating 1.5-hour camel ride to explore the area further. Upon our return to Merzouga, breakfast awaits, and there's an opportunity to shower and freshen up.
Our homeward journey takes us through the stony desert and over the Atlas Mountains. With frequent stops for photos, exploration, and lunch, we make our way back to Marrakech. The anticipated arrival time in Marrakech is typically between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm.
