Medina, the oldest part in the city of Marrakesh, offers, amongst a lot of other things, a special authentic experience which is the chaotic Souks. How to plan Morocco desert tours

The Sahara desert is an essential part of every trip to Morocco, since it is one of the main attractions that the vibrant country has to offer. However, first time travelers might get overwhelmed when trying to plan a Morocco desert tour. For this reason, we bring you this guide in hopes to simplify the task and make sure you have wonderful Morocco desert tour experience:

The planning

When planning a Morocco desert tour, there are many things that should be taken into consideration to make sure everything goes smoothly. You have to keep in mind that Morocco desert tours take place in… the desert obviously. This means that things like the weather, clothing, and special conditions should be kept in mind while planning. For example, only visit the Sahara desert during the spring (from March to May) or autumn (from September to November). This is because during these two seasons, temperatures are not too hot during the day and not too cold during the night.

Moreover, the desert is pretty isolated and far away from cities, so if you are someone who takes medication, make sure you’re packing enough for the duration of the Morocco desert tour. Don’t plan to spend 4 night in the desert if your medication only has enough for 2 nights left. You can stock up on medication and other related things in nearby cities like Erfoud or Errachidia. On that same note, make sure you’re packing flowy and light fabric clothes if you’re visiting in the spring and warm coats for autumn.

The destinations

For you Morocco desert tour, keep in mind that there are 2 main deserts in the country: the Erg Chebbi desert at Merzouga and the Erg Chigaga at Zagora. Both sets of sand dunes are southeast of Marrakesh, toward the Algerian border. The two deserts are similar in many aspects, but each one of them has its own characteristics.

Erg Chebbi:

Erg Chebbi is by far the more popular destination of the two. It is home to the largest dunes in Morocco, at an altitude of over 700 meters, which makes the experience unique. The Erg Chebbi dunes offer a mesmerizing landscape to their visitors, who can choose to cross them either by Camel, quad biked, or 4×4 vehicles. At Erg Chebbi, you can take breathtaking pictures of the desert with golden and orange hues.

Erg Chebbi

Erg Chigaga:

The Erg Chigaga dunes, located further south, reside off of a road less traveled. In fact, they’re located over 60 kilometers away from the nearest, lightly traveled road. Not to say that Erg Chigaga is harder to reach, it just may be a longer journey depending on where you’re coming from. The fascinating thing about this desert is that it remains largely untouched, wild, and unspoiled. They receive less visitors, which means that the Erg Chigaga dunes remained authentic over the years.

The itineraries

From Casablanca:

If you’re going to be arriving to Morocco through the Mohammed V Casablanca airport, there are many itinerary options for you to get a Morocco desert tour. There are many ways you can travel around in the desert, but if camels are not your cup of tea and 4×4 closed vehicles are too stuffy for you, we suggest trying out riding a quad bike with your friends

marrakech quad and buggy ride

Sand bathing:

A Spa day in the middle of the desert? Why not! Sand bathing is an ancient therapeutic remedy that the locals swear by. It’s allegedly great for rheumatism and joints pains.

Accommodations

Nomad-style desert camps: Those are desert camps scattered across the desert dunes, where you will get to stay in authentic style tents. Usually made with goat or camel skin, these are the same type of tents that local nomads build for themselves.

Luxury desert camps: If you want to spend the night outdoors at a desert camp, but you’re still looking for a comfortable and luxurious experience, then luxury desert camps are the choice for you. These carry all utilities necessary to make sour experience as comfortable as possible.

Traditional Kasbahs: Kasbahs are a traditional type of Moroccan architecture commonly found in the south of Morocco, and desert towns are no exceptions. If you do not wish to spend the night outdoor camping, you can opt for a traditional Kasbah to still get an authentic experience.

Top 9 reasons to visit Chefchaoune city

The most picturesque town in all of Morocco, and perhaps everywhere else in the world, would certainly be the town of Chefchaoune. This picture perfect city, located at the heart of the Rif Mountains, is a blue gem that attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year for its unique scenery. Why blue, you ask? No one really knows for sure, but we definitely know this city is worth the trip.

1.  Its rich history

Morocco as a whole is a country with a rich and diverse history, and Chefchaoune city is no stranger to that. The city was originally founded to serve as a protective fortress (Kasbah) in 1471 for Moulay Ali Ibn Rashid Al-Alami. He ruled over the area back during that time, and ordered for the fortress to be built in order to fight off the Portuguese invaders. After the Spanish Reconquista, the Moriscos and Jews that fled the Spanish prosecution settled in the city, alongside the local Ghomara tribes. This is how the town of Chefchaoune as we know today came to be.

2.  The surrounding landscape

Chefchaoune is located uphill, right in the middle of two mountains belonging to the Rif Mountain range. This location means that the city is surrounded from all sides by magnificent scenery peeking on the Rif Mountains and their greenery. From Chefchaoune, you can easily go on a hike through the Mountains and their surrounding landscape.

3.  Makes for a nice daytrip from Fes

Fes is one of the main Moroccan cities that holds an international airport in it, meaning it is a famous starting point for tourists to land and then begin exploring the country. Of the most famous day trip destinations from Fesis Chefchaoune city, being just about 4 hours away from each other. This means that you can get a refreshing break from the busy streets of Fes by taking it up to the Rif Mountains.

4.  Its blue color, obviously!

This goes without saying, but the town of Chefchaoune is known worldwide for one main thing: its vibrant blue painted buildings. The origin story of why Chefchaoune locals started painted their streets and walls in blue is debated upon, but it’s nonetheless a unique characteristic that can’t be seen anywhere else. This makes the city incredibly Instagram-able and picture-perfect.

5.  Traditional artisanal products

Like the rest of old Moroccan cities, Chefchaoune is an ideal place to shop for Moroccan souvenirs and handmade artisanal crafts. You can find all kinds of artisanal products being sold at the city’s Bazaars and small shops, including rugs, leather, wood, and wool work products (actually, Chefchaoune’s wool Djellabas and jackets are known all throughout Morocco for their high quality).

6.  Rass El Ma water source

A little beyond the far Northeastern gate of Chefchaoune city, a water source by the name Rass El Ma is located (Rass El Ma translates to just water source). This location holds a beautiful green scenery surrounding a small river/waterfall. Rass El Ma is popular among locals for being a place to wash clothes in the river, or to just picnic and enjoy the surrounding nature.

7.  Close-by to the Talassemtane National Park

The Talassemtane national park is a little less than an hour away from Chefchaoune city, and it’s one of Morocco’s highly protected natural reserves. The park is home to the only remaining (and endangered) fir forest in Morocco, with unique biodiversity and diverse flora. Visitors are attracted to the park because of the impressive scenery it provides, and for being perfect for hiking through the Rif mountains.

1.  Chefchaoune’s Old Medina

Just like other old Moroccan cities and towns, Chefchaoune is home to a medieval quarter, known as the Old Medina. While the city’s Old Medina may not be as large as the ones found in Marrakech or Fes, it certainly has its own charm (that probably comes from the fact that it’s BLUE). While walking through the Old Medina’s blue streets, you will learn more about the locals and how they go on about their everyday life.

1.  Its adorable stray cats

One thing that every tourist will notice (and might be surprised with) when visiting Morocco is the abundance of stray cats roaming the streets. In Chefchaoune, this can be particularly witnessed at high levels. The cats are looked after by locals, and they like to spend their days just chilling around town and doing… the things that cats do. If you’re lucky, the cats won’t mind posing for a few lovely photos that you can keep from this memorable place.

This fact is not at all a problem, since it resulted in so many luxurious and high end facilities, attractions, hotels and cafés all around the city. Just take a look at Rick’s café, Sky 28 Bar, or Morocco Mall for instance. These places make Casablanca perfect for a day of shopping or a fun night out with friends.

Traditional:

As previously mentioned, Casablanca is still at its core a Moroccan city despite the foreign influences in facilities and architecture. Casablanca city is home to a traditional Old Medina and a Jewish Quarter (Mellah), rivaling those found in more touristy cities like Fes or Marrakech. These two settlements are the pillars that mark an authentic Moroccan city in all of its glory. Besides the architecture, Casablanca city’s vibe is typical to what is spread all throughout Morocco. This can be manifested in terms of cuisine, traditional clothing, local customs and more.

Casablanca city’s attractions:

Hassan II Mosque:

The shining star of Casablanca city is unarguably the Hassan II Mosque. The Hassan II mosque is an iconic attraction that showcases the best and finest Moroccan craftsmanship on so many levels. Another unique thing about this mosque is that is it one of the few in the whole world that allow non-Muslim visitors to enter. Use this opportunity to discover this mosque’s mesmerizing interior.

The Church of Sacré-Coeur

The church of sacré Coeur, also called La Cathédrale Sacré-Coeur, used to be a sanctuary for people of the Christian faith residing in Morocco. The cathedral, finished in 1930 by French architect Paul Tournon, is an extremely important architectural piece that marries both the Gothic aesthetic and the Art Deco movement. Today, this church no longer fulfills a religious role but it can still house cultural events and expositions.

The Old Medina

Casablanca city’s Old Medina is the place to go to get a glimpse of the authentic Moroccan lifestyle. It may not be as vibrant or colorful as the Old medina of Marrakech or Fez but it certainly embodies the true Moroccan spirit. Enjoy a walk through the medina’s busy and narrow streets, filled with vendors and small antique shops. You can find genuine artisanal products at Casablanca city’s old Medina just like you can at any other Moroccan city.

Museum of Moroccan Judaism

The Moroccan Jewish Museum, or Museum of Moroccan Judaism, was founded in 1997 by Simon Levy (founder of the foundation for the preservation of Moroccan Jewish culture). The museum was originally built in 1948 as an orphanage for Jewish youth, then was later repurposed for the building that we know today. This museum in Casablanca city is one of two Jewish heritage museums in Morocco, which themselves are the only ones that exist in the Arab world.

The Arab league Park

The Arab league park in Casablanca city was founded in 1913, designed by The French architect and urban planner Albert Laprade. Covering about 30 acres of land, this park was part of a grander plan of restorations to the city’s green spaces that took place during the colonial period. After recent renovation lasting from 2016 up until 2019, the park is now open to the public to enjoy its green spaces and variety of flora.

Abderrahman Slaoui Museum

The Abderrahman Slaoui Museum is one of Casablanca city’s carefully hidden gems. Named after the late Moroccan businessman and art collector, this museum features the finest pieces from Abderrahman Slaoui’s art collection that he grew over the years. The collection is known for its orientalist art pieces, and pieces of traditional Moroccan jewelry. Another permanent display at the museum is Muhammed Ben Ali Ribati’s modernist paintings. The Abderrahman Slaoui Museum also holds frequent exhibitions of Moroccan contemporary artists, as well as art workshops for the creative youth.

Due to its reputation as a business center and economic capital of Morocco, unfortunately Casablanca city doesn’t get enough recognition for its many interesting attractions. Now that we’ve listed some of the main reasons why you should include Casablanca city in your Morocco itinerary, we hope that you will not be skipping it during your next trip to Morocco!

Top 9 activities to do while in the Moroccan desert

Morocco is a land of numerous wonders and breathtaking sights to behold. For centuries it has been attracting scientists, scholars, journalists, artists and all other sorts of people, for its inspiring natural landscapes and scenery. Traversed by the majestic Atlas Mountains and limited from north and west by the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, Morocco marries both golden beaches and thick green forests.

One other aspect of Morocco’s beauty that attracts millions of visitors from all over the world is the one of a kind Moroccan desert. The Moroccan desert is home to dunes of all sizes, from the smallest to some of the tallest in the world. Being in the Sahara desert is an unforgettable memory that we believe every adventurer and nature lover should experience at least once in their lifetime. Through this article, we will introduce you to some activities you can try out to make the best out of your Moroccan desert experience. We will be waiting for you!

Camel trekking

Now these activities are not listed in any particular order. However, we do believe that camel trekking is one of the best ways to fully enjoy the Moroccan desert experience. There’s just something about a camel ride in the middle of the endless desert dunes that just feels so magical and special, no matter if it’s your first or 100th time doing it. If you are only going to be in Morocco for a short period of time and won’t have enough time to try out the rest of these activities, then at least make sure can fit a camel trek somewhere in your schedule. You will absolutely not regret it.

Visiting nearby villages

There are many small villages you can visit while in the Moroccan desert, all with different and unique things to offer. For instance, a trip to Khamlia village will allow you to discover the origins of the famous Gnaoua music genre and meet its masters. If you’re a fan of geology, fossils and minerals, then make sure to stop by the village of Erfoud and visit the fossil museum. Another desert village you can visit is Rissani, where you can experience what a traditional weekly open market looks like in Morocco.

Quad bike rides

Besides camel trekking, quad bikes fall as a close second to the most interesting and fun means of transportation through the Moroccan desert. Quad bikes are going to be abundantly available for rent anywhere in the Sahara desert, and we recommend going for a ride at least once! They can be a ton of fun to ride with friends and family, while the desert winds run through your hair and face. Hold a quad bike race with other riders, or enjoy taking cool pictures and videos with your quad, the possibilities are endless!

Sandboarding

Sand surfing, or sandboarding, is exactly what it sounds like. If you’re a fan of skateboarding or snowboarding and you want to test your skills in a new environment, then sand surfing is the sport for you. This activity is especially interesting when you’re at the Moroccan desert because this is where you’ll find the largest sand dunes in the world, which makes it so much more unique!

Sand bathing

For centuries, desert locals have been using this ancestral practice to help relieve joints pain and rheumatism. Granted, this is an alternative medicine practice so you can’t go in expecting to get cured from your illness, but it definitely helps relieve pain and symptoms. How the “sand baths” work is that you will be buried from the neck-down in the hot Moroccan desert sand and remain there for a few minutes. Although the desert will be hot, it’s still very bearable and not uncomfortable at all.

Enjoying a bonfire

One of the best parts about spending a night in a desert camp is gathering around the bonfire and sharing unforgettable memories. Every night that you will spend out in the Moroccan desert, you will enjoy local music, Berber drums and interesting stories around a bonfire lighting up the dark. Whether it be desert tunes or classical guitar, there will always be a nightly music session animated by talented locals. Entertainment, good food, a bonfire and fun times, what more are you looking for?

Trying local cuisine

All this talk of wandering through the Moroccan desert is sure to make one hungry, right? You don’t need to worry about going hungry while enjoying your desert excursion, because there’s a ton of local cuisine for you to try out! One of the main specialties of the area is Medfouna, which is a meat filled bread that’s cooked in the sand, as organic as it gets. You might have heard about Medfouna before under the name “Berber pizza”, which is pretty accurate considering the round shape of it.

Observing wildlife

The Moroccan Sahara is home to a diverse wild life, which you might spot during your trip if you’re lucky enough! Barbary sheep, onyx, jackal and the sand fox are some of the most prominent examples of wildlife present in this desert. While spending the night in a desert camp, you can test your luck to see if you might a catch a photo of one of these species. What you can do is leave out a little bit of food after the lights and the fire are off, then wait to see what shows up to get a snack! Worst case scenario is no animals come, best case scenario you can get a really cute pictures of a little sand fox.

These were only some of the activities we suggest you try out during your next visit to the Moroccan desert. There are of course so many more things to do and experience in this breathtaking part of the world, so don’t hesitate to come and find out for yourself.

Strangely, most of the tourists who visit Morocco do it without exploring Casablanca. Many of those tourists arrive in Morocco via the international airport of Casablanca, only to leave the city shortly afterward to visit all the tourist magnets like Fez, Marrakech, the Sahara Desert, and all the other places. That’s a shame because Casablanca has no shortage of spots that will leave an impact on you; Casablanca has one of the most admirable works of architecture and one of the richest cultures.

It’s a huge city that has the richest history, culture and human diversity in Morocco. Along with a good geographical spot, that gives you access to many beautiful beaches, coasts, and very exciting excursions. So, there’s a lot to do in Casablanca.

But what are the best things you can do in Casablanca? This might be a crucial question, especially if your visit to Morocco is short.

An answer to that question could be found among our list of the top things you can do in Casablanca, Morocco.

1. Hassan II Mosque

The image of Hassan II Mosque has become synonymous with Casablanca. This mosque is a fantastic, huge work of beautiful architecture that king Hassan II built. The king wanted it to be very large; in fact, it’s the second-largest in the world with the tallest minaret. The mosque can take a huge number of worshipers. The king also wanted it to be fascinating, that is why it’s built on the tip of the shore, where you can stand on glass flour and see the ocean underneath you. The beauty of the place lies also in the architecture; the Islamic mystical geometry of the place is truly a wonder. Every corner has these trippy shapes and geometries all over.

2. Medina

Although the old Medina of Casablanca doesn’t have the same exotic feel that perhaps Fez or Marrakech has, it’s still a perfect spot to see what life in Morocco is, beyond the fancy and modern lifestyles of the city. The old Medina of Casablanca is a good stop to learn a lot about Moroccan culture. A visit to the old medina of Casablanca is a good opportunity to discover the shrines of ancient saints that people still visit to pay respect; it’s one of the spiritual aspects of Moroccan traditions.

Marrakech is probably the most famous Moroccan city, perhaps after Casablanca or maybe Tangier. But still it’s probably the most liked Moroccan city among the tourists. And it’s no wonder why. This city has probably all the characteristics that a wholesome city has. Plus, an international airport, that makes the flight there easy and direct for the people who are interested in visiting this vibrant city.

Marrakech has a lot to offer, from old medieval Islamic architecture in the old town (Medina), to the finest and most prestigious hotels. Also classy bars and nightclubs are the norm in this city, if you’re interested in the life of party.

However, a trip that visits only the city of Marrakech is probably considered incomplete if you didn’t go out of the city with some of the most exiting Marrakech excursions.

Marrakech excursions are full of surprises and novelties. You will get the impression of traveling to another country in another continent with different weather and lifestyle.

To give you an idea. Marrakech excursions can take the ambience of desert and oasis, mountains, valleys and snow, and even sea coast and old buildings.

That’s how the diversity of Marrakech excursions is manifested.

All those experiences that we mentioned, and more are all options in a Marrakech excursion. Stay with us to find out more about this subject.

Desert and Oasis.

Marrakech excursions  as we already said have a wide range of experience. One of those experiences is one that you can have in Palmeraie. This Marrakech excursion takes you to an oasis that is believed to have grown from palm tree seeds that Arab warriors dropped there centuries ago. Aside from the history of this place, the beauty is what we are concerned with, and let us tell you that it’s a good example of how an oasis has to be.

Another desert spot is the Majorelle Gardens. These gardens host the exhibitions of many exotic plants that are truly fascinating. And are also good photography material.

Marrakech excursions that take place in the Moroccan desert also take you to a fortified clay city called Ait Ben Haddo, which is listed by the UNESCO by the way. Those are some very old buildings.

But a visit to the desert will not be considered wholesome without camel rides. And don’t worry that’s the norm in Palemeraie. You will get to travel the desert on the back of a camel if you wanted to. And if you are more into engines, you also get to ride a quad bike.

Suggested Excursion:

Mountain, valley and waterfall.

The second type of Marrakech excursions is the mountain, valley and waterfall experience. As you might already know, Morocco is the home country of the highest mountain peak in North Africa and the Arab world. It’s the peak of Mount Toubkal, which belongs to the Atlas Mountains. This peak is very close to Marrakech. The thing that makes a big number of Marrakech excursions be directed towards the area of Mount Toubkal and other mountain related trips.

One interesting thing about this mountain is it’s accessibility. It’s not very hard to climb to the peak within two to three days at most. And also this place can provide the visitors with anything they need from food to refuge where they can rest.

There are actually some Marrakech excursions that take you to ski in the not-so-far ski resort Oukaïmeden. The mountain experience is a lot of fun if you like skiing or snowboarding.

There also many valleys such as Ourika and Ouzoud , where you can see the most beautiful landscapes that nature has to offer like breathtaking waterfalls where you get to take the coolest pictures of the natural landscapes. Fun fact, there are monkeys in there that consider those places their natural habitat. More than that,  there are many small villages along the way where they serve traditional foods such as the delicious Moroccan Tagines. And you get to have a close look at how people live there.

Essaouira.

Essaouira is an old Moroccan city that existed since antiquity, as many archeological findings have suggested. And that’s not the only thing about the city. It has also some buildings from the middle ages and pre-modern times. You can conclude that this city is one big museum by itself, the buildings and constructions are there to prove this point. The Portuguese used to call this place Mogador when they were in there long time ago. There are also many Portuguese architecture there as you might have already deduced. Fun fact: You can find many sites in Essaouira where Game Of Thrones was filmed.

Aside from history, the activities that you can do in this magical city include: sight seeing, the old buildings are staggeringly beautiful and full of meaning and history. You can also walk by the exhibitions of local artists and skillful artisans if you are a person who appreciates art, you can even buy souvenirs.

A third type of activities that Essaouira has to offer in surfing. Marrakech excursions offer a surfing experience for the people who are passionate about this hobby. The waves of the Atlantic Ocean are always ready for the skillful surfer to explore them.
